Polemical discourse on Russian radio broadcast

Abstract

The article specifies the features of modern Russian media discourse in the post-Soviet space. The emphasis is on clarifying the key characteristics of modern radio content, which in Russia differs significantly from the content of previous periods.
The hypothesis of this study is the assumption that radio materials that are polemical in their content and form of presentation, published on the domestic airwaves, are of greater interest to the audience. Attention is focused on a relatively new phenomenon for Russian radio broadcasts – podcasting, which is popular among the Russian audience. Measurements of the most popular topics among podcast listeners are provided.
The purpose of this study is to find out the features of polemical discourse on the air of modern domestic radio channels.
The material for the study was the programs of popular domestic radio channels – “Vesti FM”, “Radio Mayak”, “Radio Russia”, the broadcasts of which are presented on the unified Internet platform of the VGTRK holding. The criteria for selecting radio channels and specific radio programs were the following: the popularity of the radio channel according to various measurements, its long history, the presence of analytical and original radio programs on the air of the radio channel. The research material consisted of radio broadcasts from the designated radio stations, the release of which was dated 2023. The selection of broadcasts was carried out using a continuous sampling method, while their polemical component was taken into account. The method of linguistic analysis made it possible to identify the speech features of polemical radio materials and clarify the popular linguistic means characteristic of modern radio polemics.
During the research, a sociological method is used: the work presents the results of an annual survey, which is conducted in student audiences and allows us to identify the characteristics of media consumption among modern youth. Thus, in particular, the degree of popularity of radio as a mass media among youth audiences is clarified.
