Abstract

The article delves into the phenomena of virtual experience of cultural trauma and preservation of cultural memory of the Yugoslavia Wars of 1991–2009. The mechanisms of trauma reproduction are established through Jeffrey Alexander’s theoretical framework (special mention is given to the sociocultural theory of trauma establishment), the categories of trauma are described with terminology of Sergei Ushakin. The research establishes that the preservation of cultural memory is conducted through the observation of virtual memorials, while the experiencing of cultural trauma is exercised through virtual communication. The act of virtual communication is perceived with an additional existential aspect, presented in the form of virtual being-there. The virtual practices are illustrated with the examples of memorial pages dedicated to Belgrade bombings, and with examples of communication related to the Yugoslavia Wars on thematical online forums.
